Together, But Separate

Last night I finally watched the movie Julie & Julia. Have you seen it? It is based on two true stories. One is about the famous cook Julia Child, and the nother is about Julie Powell, a woman who reads Julia Child’s cookbook over the year, cooks all her recipes and blogs about it. It’s a fascinating journey through their parallel but separate lives (separated by about 50 years and the Atlantic Ocean).

I liked the movie because it was about blogging. I’ve been seriously blogging for the past year and have wondered about some of the same things Julie pondered in the movie such as, “I wonder who is reading my blog?” I’ve also found my blogging to be an incredible personal journey, which she discovered as well.

In Julia Child's story line, I really liked the part when Julia is trying to find a hobby to keep her busy while her husband works. She tries hat making, playing bridge…but nothing seems to keep her attention. In several scenes she and her husband are sitting in a restaurant eating. No, it’s not just eating; they are completely enjoying their food.

As she struggles to find her passion, he says, “What is it that you love?” and she responds (with food in her mouth), “I love food.” And from there she begins her journey into the world of cooking.

Don’t we all deserve to find our passion and have the opportunity to make it our life work? At one point Julia says, “I love to go shopping for food the way some people like to go shopping for a dress.” She LOVES to cook and eat, and she goes on to become one of the most recognized household (kitchen) names.

My interest in Julie’s storyline (some 50 years later than Julia’s) is that she is blogging from her heart. She blogs and cooks every day. Over the course of a year she becomes not only a great blogger (with a huge following) but also a great cook…and she does both of these from her heart.

That is my goal: to live and blog from my heart. I want to be here with you, sharing my journey and inviting you to take your own journey with me. Not “with me” in the sense we are on the same exact road experiencing the same things, but that we both recognize we are each on our own, personal journey: together, but separate.

What is your goal? What’s happening on your journey? I am looking forward to walking our paths together, but separate…and together.
