The Storm Gods

The storm gods are rather uncertain as to the coming of winter and who gets to appear first: freezing fog, ice and icy winds or snow.

Right now icy wind is rattling the windows and skeleton trees tap against the side of the house. The giants of chaos are restless, and their turmoil makes it hard for me to sleep. It always seems to me that the ancients had a much more picturesque and accurate way to speak of weather.

I'd find it easier to imagine Thor blowing icy breath or Skadi arriving on her skis, bringing snow then to hear the boring news that an arctic front is moving in. Perhaps it is because we live more sheltered lives protected from the elements that we have lost our intimacy with the gods of the weather and the elements—and at the same time our awe.

Yet even in our energy efficient homes and solid cars with studded tires we are at risk, more so perhaps than our ancestors. It takes only a major storm to cause a power outage, and within a moment we discover how helpless we are in the presence of the elemental gods. Without electricity most of us have no heat source, no light source and no water.

Sometimes when the storm gods are restless, I imagine they are laughing at us.
