Rainbows

A beveled mirror hangs in my bathroom, and at certain times of the day the sun comes to play, shining through the window. Together the sun and mirror create some magic. The entire room is covered with rainbows: on the ceilings, the walls, the towels and the curtains. And when I step into this magical realm, I too am covered in rainbows.

The colors are intense and brilliant, and I stand silent and in awe as I try to go back to find the place where I have hidden my memory of the first time I saw a rainbow—a time before I was told the practical explanations of math and science and optics.

What did I believe before all that? How would I tell someone today about the magic of the colors if I spoke from only the place of wonder and delight? From where does all this color come? Where does it live when the sun is not shining through the window and playing with the mirror? What a great opportunity to remember that what we see isn’t all that is. The Norse peoples believed the rainbow was the Bifrost Bridge, a magical image connecting the realms of Asgard and Midgard, the dwelling places of the gods and humans.

I like to imagine that when I step into the room and am covered in rainbows I have stepped onto this bridge and been given a glimpse of the place where the gods dwell.
