November’s Descent
By Ingrid Kincaid ~ 11/27/2009
These first few weeks after Halloween is the time Jack-o-lanterns collapse, exhausted from too much grinning. Crows make calls to each other from atop phone poles as cornstalks rattle in the wind and squirrels scurry about burying things they hope to remember.
Rain drips from a gray sieve sky in a futile attempt to extinguish the burning autumn leaves as the smoke twirls in defiance. We have passed the point of turning back as we descend into winter. Yet we have turned back time on our clocks and it is dark now before many return home at the end of the day. This is the time of year about death and dying and letting go.
This is the time of year in the northern hemisphere when the days are short, the nights are long and nature is dormant and resting. There is great wisdom in paying attention to nature and discovering ways to bring our personal lives into harmony with what is happening on the earth around us.
