Not Just A Dirty Word
I would like you to take a few deep breaths and allow your self to relax and let your mind travel back to a time when people joyfully celebrated the seasons and the sun and lunar cycles with equal reverence. Hold the thought of this time gently in your mind and allow yourself to quietly sit and be informed by this ideals of the old ways. Ok, you may continue reading.
The word feminist to most has a rather aggressive connotation that that often conjures thoughts of angry women that aren’t too fond of men. I would like share the basic definition of feminism in all of it’s simplicity. Feminism simply means, someone who thinks that females and males should be treated equally. No more, no less, just equal partners on the planet. For many people this idea seems completely natural and many of you may think to yourself it’s 2010 of course we are all equal. Alas, I am compelled to share with you the unfortunate reality that women are still facing when it comes to being treated equally. The current statistic in the United States if both a male and a female do the exact same job, that involves an exactly equal amount of work for the same amount of hours on average the female will only be paid $.78 on the dollar compared to her male co-worker. The math comes out to $15.60 an hour for the female and $20 an hour for the male solely based on their gender.
So, I implore you when someone whispers the term feminist like it’s a dirty word or they qualify their statement with “I’m not a feminist, but…” I oblige you to support them and let them know that it’s ok to be a feminist because everyone being treated equally is quite a noble idea. After all, there was a time when females and feminine qualities were exalted and we equally revered a Goddess as a bringer of life. We had equal reverence for the importance of both genders as well as an understanding of the importance of the fragile balance of masculine and feminine in all that we do.
May you find abundance in all that you do!
