Cereal in the Shower: I Did It!

Okay. I did it. I finally ate a bowl of cereal in the shower.

Why would I do that? you might ask. Because my 14-year-old son James sometimes eats his breakfast in the shower and suggested I at least try it out.

It’s been two months since I first wrote about the possibility of eating cereal in the shower. In fact, we’ve had our master bath remodeled since that time. But I hadn’t forgotten; it just wasn’t on the top of my priority list.

Back to why I did it. I’m not sure: probably for my mothering integrity. I told James I would try it and so I felt obligated. Perhaps it was also my journalistic morals. I told you, my readers, that I would...and so I did.

It wasn’t as bad as I thought. Remember my concern about the Cereal Crunchiness Ration (CCR) being messed up? CCR refers to the necessary crunchiness the cereal must have per bite. If too much time elapses in between bites, then the cereal is too soggy. Yuck!

I was hungry when I got home this morning from working out and also knew I needed a shower. What a perfect time to fulfill my commitment to James and do some “journalistic research.”

I poured my cereal and carried the milk into the bathroom with me. I started the shower, and just before I stepped in I poured the milk into the bowl. I knew the clock was ticking.

Our newly remodeled shower now has a small bench that can also double as a table when eating in the shower. I still don’t think a lot of people eat in the shower, but who knows?

I adjusted the water temperature and held my bowl as I took my first bite. The crunchiness was perfect. The time I spent chewing allowed me to set my bowl down on the bench (not under the water, of course) and get my hair wet. It really wasn’t too bad. My fears about the CCR being affected were unfounded.

Will I eat cereal in the shower again? Probably not. I prefer to enjoy my cereal at the table and my shower in the bathroom. I prefer them to be mutually exclusive events.

But I don’t regret at least trying it. Isn’t one of the best brainstorming techniques to take two completely unrelated things and combine them together to see what you get?

And you never know: by eating in the shower I could have discovered an entirely new line of restaurants where you can multi-task eating and showering.

I’ll have to do some brainstorming on what I would call the restaurant. Any ideas?
