Interaction with Your Animal Totems
By Karen Kleinwort ~ 8/20/2010
As a young child I always loved animals; dogs of course were my favorite, but any animal really fascinated me. This didn’t mean I wasn’t cautious or timid of certain animals, but I did have a healthy respect for them. There were times I thought I could understand them, but I always wrote it off as my being silly. Over time, though, I’ve come to realize that actually each interaction held a special gift—and if I was open enough to receiving it, I would. During my personal growth journey I’ve learned a little about animal totems and how they can be wonderful guides in your journey toward spiritual enlightenment. The following are six different approaches to learning how animals can support us and how we can, in turn, actually seek their guidance when we know how to interact with them. In previous blogs I’ve shared my experience of learning how to discern which animals are part of your totem, so this blog will focus on the available modalities we can use.
Totem Oracle Cards
There are several oracle cards available on the market to help you communicate with your totems. In most such decks each card has a picture of an animal and a small description of what the card means. The decks usually come with a booklet that contains detailed descriptions as well as spread suggestions.
One of the best ways to interact with your animal totems through oracle cards is by drawing out a card and meditating on it. Most people who practice this method claim they receive guidance during meditation.
Totem Dreams
Send out a request to your totem to appear in you dream before going to sleep. You may also ask your question while still awake and then seek the answer in your dream. This can occur even if you do not consciously put out the request, so pay attention to your dreams and notice which animals appear as well as when and what their role within the dream are.
Totem Songs
There are several pagan songs and chants associated with each totem. Research and learn the one you feel drawn to and chant it while meditating to seek guidance from your totem. People find the vibration of the songs not only resonate with their totem but also support the raising of their own frequencies and vibrations to help improve their health and wellness.
Totem Prayers
Prayer is the most powerful tool for seeking divine guidance and assistance. You can pray anywhere as long as you do it sincerely and with complete faith. You do not need to word your prayer in any particular way. As long as the words come from your heart, you can rest assured they will reach your totem. The key here is to trust what you receive and not judge what comes through during your prayers or meditations.
Totem Art
Totem art can help you focus on your totem when you send out a prayer or request for its assistance or guidance. In case you possess the talent, you can also try to create your own totem art. This will help you create a stronger connection between yourself and your totem. Remember, when you are using your inner artist the creation process will support you in making a heart and soul connection with your totem.
Totem Quest
This modality requires the supervision of a qualified teacher or mentor. The quest involves choosing a calm and peaceful spot surrounded by natural beauty where you can fast and meditate for a period of four days. Though this is considered an effective way to communicate with your totem, you shouldn’t attempt it on your own.
Animals are natural born healers and provide an unlimited amount of knowledge. Our role is to open our hearts to hearing their wisdom as well as providing a safe environment in which their wisdom will be received. Your totems can bring you important messages; all you need to do to receive them is keep yourself in a state of gratitude and love. Every day when I interact with my two dogs I not only learn something about myself but also more about my true calling in life and which elements are supportive of my soul purpose here on Earth.
Until next time, embrace your inner wisdom.
Namaste,
Karen

Animal Totems
I have a deck of the Totem cards and the book that goes with them. It is so interesting to find out what animals or birds are ones totems. I had several relatives that doubted the existence of Totems so I went through the exercise with them to find theirs. They were amazed at the variety of animals and birds, etc. that appeared to fit them. And everyone was different. Now they are all believers.
