Diseases and Smoking

If you are planning to stub that cigarette butt for good and need some motivation, then this piece may be just what you need! Everyone knows smoking causes cancer, but that is not the only disease you open yourself up to when you light up those death sticks! Researchers have found that smoking in fact creates a fertile breeding ground in the body for several diseases, including those detailed below.

Cardiovascular Diseases

Nicotine increases the cholesterol deposits in the body, which in turn leads to the hardening of arteries. Hardened arteries can cause blood clots, and blood clots increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

This refers to a health condition in which a person has difficulty breathing. Emphysema and chronic bronchitis come under this category. Smoking is believed to be the cause of 80% of the reported cases of COPDs.

Poor Oral Health

Smoking is detrimental to oral health as well. Smokers often complain of stained teeth, weak gums and bad breath.

Mouth Ulcers

Smoking increases acid formation in the mouth, thereby leading to mouth ulcers. Mouth ulcers may not be a very serious health problem, but they do make eating extremely difficult and can cause a lot of discomfort and pain.

Fertility Problems and Sexual Dysfunction

Smoking can lead to several sexual problems, including lower libido as well as fertility problems. The chances of conceiving are significantly lower in couples who smoke.

Early Aging

More wrinkles, pale skin, low stamina—smoking not only causes premature aging, but it also makes the signs of aging 10 times worse!

Other Diseases

Smoking also increases the risk of diseases like diabetic retinopathy, multiple sclerosis, chest infections, tuberculosis, etc.

Worsens Asthma

If you suffer from asthma, every cigarette is poisonous for you as it increases inflammation of the lungs.

Eyesight Problems

Smokers are more prone to cataracts and usually have weaker eyesight.

As if cancer wasn’t scary enough, smoking invites a host of other dangerous diseases into your life! There is no such thing as limited smoking, and every cigarette you light brings you a step closer to the hospital. So kick the bad habit for good if you want to live a healthy life.

There are many support groups and means with which to surround yourself during the transition of kicking the habit of smoking. I encourage you take the first step and begin searching for a solution and support network that is right for you. If the timing isn’t quite right, then begin to look for a time when the timing will be right. Set a goal and go after it.

Your health and wellness is your responsibility. No one else can make these types of decisions for you, but we can support you while making the decision and while you are moving through it. Asking for help is the first and most important step in taking back your health. Look within, find your courage and raise your hand. You will be surprised at who will step forward to support you.
