To Truly Celebrate
By Ingrid Kincaid ~ 12/25/2009
December is my birthday month, winter baby that I am. It seems, at least for me, that the years pass more quickly as I age—especially now that I am more than 60.
What I have noticed this past year is an increased awareness of my mortality, not from the place that I fear death but more from the realization that there are still so many places I dream of discovering, things I want to explore, knowledge I hope to gain, and experiences I long to have.
It matters not how well I eat, how much I exercise, how sensibly I try to live: I will still grow old and eventually die. So I have decided I just better get busy and embrace my life even more fully than I have before.
I must say I am in complete agreement with Eleanor Roosevelt, who said, "I could not at any age be content to take my place in a corner by the fireside and simply look on." Rather than being depressed by advancing age, I intend to embrace it.
I will eagerly look forward to each new year, just as I did when I was a child: making lists of what I will do when I am 61 and 62 and 63 and on and on, making sure each year I experience something new. Perhaps at my age it is even wiser to declare I will challenge myself to do something new every day.
