Mending the Center
By Ingrid Kincaid ~ 1/08/2010
"Ours is not the task of fixing the entire world all at once, but of stretching out to mend the part of the world that is within our reach." ~ from "Letter To A Young Activist During Troubled Times" by Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés
~
"We are asked today to feel compassionately for everyone in the world--to digest intellectually all the information spread out in public print and to implement in action every ethical impulse roused by our hearts and minds. The inter-relatedness of the world links us constantly with more people than our hearts can hold. Or rather—for I believe the heart is infinite—modern communication loads us with more problems than the human frame can carry. Because we cannot solve our own problems right here at home, we talk about problems out there in the world. Where have we arrived in this process? Have we been successful, working at the periphery of the circle and not at the center? When we start at the center of ourselves, we discover something worthwhile extending toward the periphery of the circle." ~ from "Gift From The Sea" by Anne Morrow Lindbergh (1955)
Even though there exists a space of almost 50 years between these two quotes, the wisdom is timeless. What needs to be mended in the center of my circle? What wounds need to be healed? What hunger needs to be satisfied? What abuse or injustice needs to be addressed? Who is standing on my street corner cold and homeless or hungry, waiting outside the market where I shop? What can I do this winter season to mend the part of the web that is within my reach?
