The Sixth Sense
By Karen Kleinwort ~ 9/22/2009
Intuition: The Power of the Sixth Sense
What is intuition? A gut feeling? Instinct? Your inner voice? The subconscious? Or a sixth sense? It is actually all of these, and the word you choose to describe it depends on your conditioning and beliefs. Intuition is not a special power that a few blessed souls possess; it is universal just like the sense of smell. Some of us may be more intuitive than others, but the fact is that all of us posses this sixth sense.
Theories of Intuition
A common theory of intuition is that everything in the universe is energy; needless to say, this is a well-accepted fact as well. In metaphysical terms all human interaction can be described as interaction between energies. Our bodies are capable of sensing the energies around us and our mind can sense the energy of every situation we visualize: this ability is called the sixth sense or intuition. By paying close attention to the subtle reactions of our body and mind to every person we meet and every situation we find ourselves in (visualized or present), we can understand and interpret the meaning of our mind and body reactions (Read: intuition).
A lot of people also explain intuition as tapping into the universal knowledge. This theory is like a different version of the energy concept. According to believers of this theory of intuition, the knowledge of past, present, and future lies in the universe; our sixth sense helps us tap into this universal knowledge. Since all of us are blessed with a sixth sense or intuition, we are capable of using it to make better life decisions; all that we need to be able to do is to interpret the subtle language of intuition.
How Does Intuition Work?
You can see examples of how your intuition works every day if you start paying close attention to your ostensibly instinctive acts or coincidences. For instance, you might feel a sudden desire to call up a friend and he/she tells how badly they needed someone to talk to or decide not to take a certain route on a day and discover later that had you not followed that instinct you would have been stuck in a traffic jam! These are just some simple, everyday examples of how intuition works.
In fact, our intuition manifests itself in several ways. For some people it's an inner voice or their dreams. For others it's the way their body reacts to situations and people. For Tarot readers, symbols and pictures on the cards form the language of intuition. To learn the best way to use your sixth sense, you would need to do some amount of introspection and experimentation. Introspection involves looking within and understanding yourself, and experimentation involves trying different methods of sharpening your intuition to see what works best for you.
Until next time, embrace your inner wisdom.
Namaste,
Karen
