Follow Through
By Karen Kleinwort ~ 9/08/2009
Follow Through Is the Last Piece of the Puzzle
Recently I found a video on YouTube and thought it was perfect timing to share this resource. It is a wonderful video of two self-made multimillionaires meeting with Tony Robbins and asking the self-help expert, "Why do some people follow through and others don't?"
This topic is near and dear to anyone who wants to get from A to B, C, or Z or who happens to be journeying alongside someone else who wants to make his or her own journey from A to B. Robbins, by the way, likes to figure out where B or C or Z is for a particular person by asking them two questions: "What pisses you off?" and "What excites you?" It's a great way of determining what a person doesn't want and what she does. Some people get there and some don't, athough it's usually not for lack of ability or resources. Quitters? Ask Robbins...
So Robbins is having fun chatting with Frank Kern and John Reese, looking relaxed and laughing. He answers their question about follow through by saying that for some people it just means they aren't enough out of their comfort zone, and maybe they're not afraid enough of not reaching their full potential or aren't hungry enough. Having your back against the walk helps you be in the position to do what it takes. You've got to have a desire.
Then he shares his "4-square" system—belief, potential, action, results—and how they are key to momentum. By this time he's noticeably talking about something that excites him. We all start off with our beliefs about our potential, which determine the actions we take, which in turn will determine the results we will we achieve. Our results will, in turn, reinforce our beliefs. If you want to change your results, don't change your potential or take more action. Instead, change your belief, and that will change how you view your potential.
Following through invites you to
- Remember to visualize what you want;
- Know WHY you want it;
- Follow through.
Here's how to practice follow through:
- Prepare Your 4 Squares Take a blank sheet and fold it in four squares. Label the squares, starting in the top left-hand corner, as such: Potential-Action-Results-Belief. Once you’ve identified where you’re going and why, you’ll want to come back to this.
- Visualize Your Results Turn the blank paper over. That blank page is you choosing the life you want. Ask yourself where you want to be in three or six or nine months. Close your eyes and visualize your results. See the results before you get them. When you connect with the feeling that you’re in the place that you’re supposed to be, doing what you’re supposed to do, anchor that feeling. That’s your WHY.
- Write Down Your WHY. It might sound like this: “I want to achieve those results, because I’ll be validating ___.” You’ll probably hear yourself use words like “life calling” or “purpose.” Finding your WHY, might involve asking questions like, “What’s in it for me if I do? What’s in it for me if I don’t? Is this a big enough WHY to keep me going? Am I willing to settle FOR this? (This is a brilliant question because settling is about accepting something that’s beneath your potential, so essentially you’re asking, “Is this me tapping into my full potential?”). Is this a must for me – something that I won’t want to give up on?
- Follow-through Act with certainty; get out of no-man’s land. If it’s a “must” for you, make it work. This means checking in with your beliefs to see if they’ll get you where you want to go.
- Revisit Your 4 Squares Record the results you want to achieve, and then work backward. Ask yourself what actions you need to take to achieve these results. Then ask yourself what you need to believe about yourself and your potential to make this happen.
- Get a Coach/Mentor According to Cynthia Kersey, author of Unstoppable, research from Rockefeller University has shown only one out of 10 people successfully made desired changes on their own, even if their life depended on it. The proven solution Kersey recommends – a solution is likely to increase the rate of success from one out of 10 people to at least eight out of 10 people – is to put in place an accountability structure.
BELIEF -> POTENTIAL -> ACTION -> RESULTS -> BELIEF.
Robbins also talks about doing daily rituals that give you momentum and create an attitude of, “I’m going to do one thing a day” to condition the mind and get into a state follow-through with the results you desire. Progress makes people excited.
What is getting you excited today? This week? This month? Do you have your accountability resource in place? If not, what is holding you back?
Until next time, embrace your inner wisdom.
Namaste,
Karen
